I had an opportunity to visit a school for the blind for several days while in India.
God is such a good giver of Gifts. If you would like to know more about how I got connected with this school for the blind, please reach out & I will gladly share with you more.
Arriving to this school for the blind brought tears to my eyes. Meeting the children, teenagers, elders, & visiting with the family that manages this school, felt surreal. Between the hours of quality conversations, the laughs with the girls who resided at the blind school, the stories upon stories heard, I left walking away full to the brim.
Hearing the incredible testimonies of the residents & management’s lives, left me inspired to give this life everything I have in response to spreading and sharing unconditional love to the ends of this earth. I could go on and on about this family that manages this school. I am truly honored to know them & have been able to spend time with them!
Out of the many stories heard & memories made in that time, there is one that I would like to specifically share with you. It is a story about an 85 year old woman who has been blind since age 2. She has been at this school just about her entire life.
This woman was born into in a Hindu family. From the disease of measles, she lost her eyes entirely. Being that she was a girl, without eyes, it was no longer desirable for her family to have her anymore. Her family was contemplating to throw her in the Gange’s river rather than to keep her around. But at the time, a British officer had recommended bringing her to the school for the blind. So that is what happened. She was taken to the school.
At around age 14 or 15, she came to accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior & has been a believer ever since.
This beautiful 85 year old woman had said “Jesus is my best friend. I am grateful to be blind because if I hadn’t been blind I may have never had the opportunity to know Jesus my Lord and Savior.”
Amazing. This woman learned about Jesus Christ by being at this school for the blind. Had she not been to this school, she may have never had the opportunity to know Jesus in the way she does today.
I went on to ask her what the best advice she would have for a 22 year old would be in this life. Her response, “Wisdom is found in the Bible. Look to the Bible for all wisdom.”
Sweet woman, fair enough! The best kind of wisdom in my opinion.
This is just a small glimpse of God working through the lives of people who have given it their all to be the hands & feet of Jesus through word and action, wherever their feet may go.
On an even more personal note, as I was there at the school spending some time with teenage girls at the school, I closed my eyes for a moment to try and step into what it may feel like to not see, but to hear the beautiful voices of these people.
Then I was reminded of something.
Jesus never judged from the outward appearances, he only saw straight to the heart. “I want that God, I want the eyes of Jesus, to see like you see anyone I cross paths with. I want the eyes to see what you are doing & to partner with that” I thought to myself.
God see’s & cares about the meditation of our heart. So should we, right?
Imagine what it would be like if we had eyes to see others only through the eyes of what people’s hearts were saying rather than appearance. There would be less judgement, less comparison, & more listening, & hopefully, more love.
Lately, my prayer has been, God will you glaze my eyes from what my human flesh see’s & give me new sight to see how you see things. & friend, it has been so good. I am convinced there is no better way to live than to live in communion with the Father & learn to be like Jesus more and more everyday.
Thank you for reading & I hope your day is filled with peace, joy, and love today. & thank you to those that helped make this visit to the blind school happen in the first place. I appreciate you a lot 🙂 Forever grateful for that time.
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” Mathew 6:21
“My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways” Proverbs 23:26
In deep appreciation,
Kailey
P.S. Speaking of eyes to see like Jesus-I believe God places people in our paths just about anywhere & everywhere to share a glimpse of love with. On the way to the school for the blind, an opportunity came up to share the gospel with an elderly man riding the bus with us. We built such a wonderful connection, this man decided he wanted to pay for not just one, but all of our bus tickets.
On the way back from the school for the blind, we also had a significant encounter with someone too.
I actually ended up falling asleep on this bumpy bus ride but as I awoke, I noticed a woman directly in front of me, with a tumor on her neck & breathing tubes. Immediately filled with compassion, I asked “Sister what happened” & in broken English that is where I learned she was battling this tumor. It did not look good.
After asking permission to pray for healing-we prayed in the name of Jesus that she would be healed & she would feel touched by the Father’s love for her. Her eyes lit up, she started smiling big, & said thank you several times.
We happened to be getting off at the same bus stop-and as we got off I felt Holy Spirit encourage me to ask if she knew who Jesus was.
This woman in broken English-said no, who is he? Then her daughter approached us and asked the same question. After doing my best to explain who Jesus was-I asked both of them, do you know what Christianity is? They said-“no what is that?” Then I asked “Do you know what the bible, the book is?” or “have you ever seen a church before?” The daughter responded “No I have never heard of Jesus or the bible, but where can I find such a book to learn more?” The daughter said that she had seen one church in her life but that she would go to that church to ask for a Bible.
Dumbfounded. Honored to have met this mother & daughter. Broken within on how many people have not heard the name of Jesus Christ. & humbled by how privileged I have been to grow up learning about the unconditional love of the Father my whole life. My hopes are to be a vessel for this Love, wherever my feet may go.
You go Kailey!!
I believe what you said- every where we go every moment is a chance to look around and say “who needs God’s love that is near me? Who needs a prayer or word of encouragement?” It is so important to look and actually see those around us not as they appear physically but what is happening inside of them like Jesus does. And what you are doing in India is removing the blinders and helping these folks to see His Light. In the US many are not just blind they are irreverent … disregarding or disrespecting Our Lord and Savior without getting to know Him.
I recently had an encounter here with such a person who is a friend and I was very much like this not too many years ago. I had very strong anti-Christian views really knowing very little.
God can use our witness if we let Him, if we let the Holy Spirit fill and guide us.
It continues to amaze me how open, hungry, vulnerable these folks are in India. May God bless their willing and eager hearts and yours as you share The Good News!!
